Quelques anecdotes - Single stories

Les alliés savaient ! the allies knew !

The Bf 108 belung to the Dienstelle Fliegerführer 220 of the 7th Flieger Division, registered NF + AW. But because of the bad weather and a failure, the aircraft crashed at Vucht near Mechelem in Belgium. Reinberger was arrested before he had time to burn his incriminating documents. The allies refused to believe in the veracity of these documents ! The failure of the Bf 108 was due to a bad selection of tanks and the tank still contained 79 liters of fuel. Reinberger and Hönmans were sentenced to death by Hitler, but luckily for them interned in Canada.

Sonderkommando Blaich
Theo Blaich, German pilot, gone in Central America then Cameroon to make fortune in bananas, bought a Bf 108B-1 before the war. He put it at the disposal of the Luftwaffe. But we remember him for the raid on Fort Lamy and the Free French of his tiny unit composed of the Bf 108D-1 Trop "KG+EM" used and the Heinkel 111 H-6 "VQ+BA" (W.Nr 4145 - Crew : Lt Bohnsack (pilot), Uffz Wichman (Radio operator), Fw Geisler (machanic) and a reporter, Lt Dettmann) on January 21st, 1942. 1650 kg of bombs were dropped and oil supplies and (probably) some 10 planes were destroyed. Theo Blaich finished the war in Yugoslavia as commander of a training unit (information not confirmed regarding the He 111 designation and the names of crew members).

Early 1944, the KG 200, a special unit for secret missions, organized the operation " Etappenhase ". A Bf 108 is chosen to look for a line of airfield in Africa among allied positions. A He 111 was fiited to tow a Me 108 registered T9+XK. These two planes took off in the middle of the night from Athens. Once released, the Me 108 flew southward close to the ground. Two days later, thanks to this, a new ultra-secret airfield welcomed a Flying Fortress B 17 with German marks and 4 tons of material to finish the construction of the track. Then the Me 108 took off to find a second airfield, then a third one close to the targets of the west coast of Africa. That's how, in summer, 1944, a system allowed the Germans to cross Sahara in diagonal. But once, some secret agents, captured, revealed the secret bases which were destroyed. The Bf 108 was burned on the spot.

Typhoon contre Taifun - Typhoon against Taifun
On October 3rd, 1943, Hptm Siegfried Bethke (12 or 14 victories), flight instructor at the Cazaux school, flew with a Me Bf 108 to meet General Jungk near Paris. He was with a Unteroffizier in charge of the maintenance of the Bf 108 for whom it was the first flight. At about 5 pm, they landed without any problem at Creil after a 3 hours flight. The following day, they took off again at about 5 pm to Pont Audemer to meet his old friend from 2. / JG2. By safety, Bethke flew low. Above the Seine valley, he saw a plane. Friend or foe ? Bethke flew under 25 meters. But suddenly, the plane appeared in front of him, started again  to climb and begian to turn rfor a dog fight : it was a Typhoon. But so suddenly appeared 2 Fw 190 : the Rottenführer opened fire and the Typhoon, touched, took fire and crashed in a forest. The 2 Fw 190 disappeared immediately. Bethke landed a bit later in Pont Audemer. The following day, during his return flight, he met his rescuers in Conches : the shooter was Fw. Siegfried Lemke from I./JG 2. He was surprised to know that a Bf 108 was there when he shot down the Typhoon : he did not see it. The pilot of the Typhoon shot down (registered JP 434) was probably the F/O Oliver B. James. James, previously pilot of Hampden, had his letf hand amputated by German doctors in 1941 after a crash in France. He escaped and started again to fly but this time on Typhoon.

Badly known model : aircarfts designated D-IZAN (ex Bf 108A) and D-IELE were Bf 108C fitted with an engine Siemens Sh 14a (160 HP) and then an Argus AS 10. The D-IELE carried Olympic Games films from Oslo to Berlin. Two other models fitted with engine HM 508C were designated Bf 108C (including the D-IAXC) and also probably the model D-IIPY.
